Meeting Families Where They Are: Rural Communication That Resonates

This session continues the joint mission of supporting Early Career Scholars to take developmental science beyond academia — and into real-world impact across diverse cultural and community contexts. Drawing on cross-cultural research and community-engaged work across Africa, the session will explore how developmental scientists can communicate research in ways that resonate with families and communities, particularly in rural and culturally diverse settings.

Presenter: Dr. Pamela Wadende
Kisii University, Kenya

Pamela Wadende is a Senior Lecturer of Developmental Psychology at Kisii University, Kenya. Her research explores how children flourish in rapidly changing societies across low- and middle-income countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Zambia. Supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, her work examines character development among children living in adversity and the role of environmental factors in shaping developmental outcomes. She is a member of several international psychological associations, including the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development (ISSBD) and Developmental Scientists for Climate Action (DevSCA). In all these communities, Pamela serves as a vital bridge between global developmental theories and the unique cultural realities of Africa, ensuring that African perspectives are represented in the global discourse on child psychology and education.
